Just watch excellent Prime Time Investigates about crazy zoning up and down the country.

The experience of the small village of Puckane very closely resembels Julianstown.

Julianstown is under severe pressure from the past and potential rezoning decisions of our councillors. Right now negotiations are in progress to zone enough land on the south of Drogheda for at least 5000 houses as part of the Drogheda Environs plan. At the same time negotiations are stepping up behind closed doors to rezone more land in Julianstown to double the size of the village

The NRA has now got data for traffic volumes on the new M1 at the toll plaza on its website.
The data show that there are between 27,000-30,000 vehicles per day using the toll. This shows more evidence that the 22,000 vehicles in Julianstown are probably not toll avoiding but are in fact travelling the shortest route to South Drogheda, East Meath.
The relative scale of the figures is also interesting. Only a small difference between the new €200M motorway and the level of traffic in Julianstown.

There was more discussion of the Julianstown school crossing in the papers today. Councillor’s expressed the real fear that there will be a serious or even fatal accident at some time in the future.
The fact is that 22,000 vehicles per day are still passing through julianstown with approximately 1600/hr at the 9.00 school drop off time.
The Council is trying to cover itself and says it is not responsible, but how can that be true? They know there is a serious traffic and safety problem in Julianstown and will not take steps to address the major problems in either the near or long term.

A young child was killed by a truck in Mountrath Co. Laois. In Julianstown over a 1000 HGVs go through the village every day. Trucks and pedestrians/cyclists are incompatible. Why do we have this situation where our children are in danger constantly from the heavy traffic?

As judging day for Pride of Place approaches, we would appreciate volunteers to help with a spruce up in the village…litter pick up, strimming, weeding and general tidy up around the shrub beds, seat etc.
Saturday 14 July 10.00 am at school or if it suits you better
Thursday 12 July 7.30 pm at school.
Bring strimmers, brushes, shovels. Litter pick up equipment can be provided.
Many thanks.
