This item from the RTE program Capital D from March 20th includes reference to the health effects of noise and also to a strategic noise mapping exercise that is being carried out there. Meath County Council has carried out a similar one in Julianstown. Health experts also talk about the effect of noise on human health.

Yet another town bypassed for a fraction of the traffic in Julianstown. This time is is Charlestown in Mayo. The report says that the bypass will remove 7000 vehicles per day from the town. Good luck to them, but what about the 22,000 vehicles in Julianstown.

The NRA has now got data for traffic volumes on the new M1 at the toll plaza on its website.
The data show that there are between 27,000-30,000 vehicles per day using the toll. This shows more evidence that the 22,000 vehicles in Julianstown are probably not toll avoiding but are in fact travelling the shortest route to South Drogheda, East Meath.
The relative scale of the figures is also interesting. Only a small difference between the new €200M motorway and the level of traffic in Julianstown.

There was more discussion of the Julianstown school crossing in the papers today. Councillor’s expressed the real fear that there will be a serious or even fatal accident at some time in the future.
The fact is that 22,000 vehicles per day are still passing through julianstown with approximately 1600/hr at the 9.00 school drop off time.
The Council is trying to cover itself and says it is not responsible, but how can that be true? They know there is a serious traffic and safety problem in Julianstown and will not take steps to address the major problems in either the near or long term.

Monday, 8th October 2007Julianstown School Crossing needs to be made safer, says Hannigan
The current school crossing at Julianstown needs to be made safer, because it is currently a potential danger to adults and children using it, according to local Senator Dominic Hannigan.
Hannigan was speaking after observing the traffic light crossing in operation at the school. He said “During the time I spent there I saw two cars drive straight through a red light, as if they were completely oblivious to the light. It was shocking and I can only imagine the disastrous consequences if an adult or child had been crossing on a green signal at the time.”
“It would appear that the failure of motorists to observe the lights is down to two reasons. Firstly, the amount of time the lights are orange is very short. I fear some drivers might be attempting to run the orange, but end up driving through a red light. So I have asked the engineer to look at the signal timings.”
“Secondly, from an examination of the area surrounding the lights, there’s a hell of a lot of background signage that might be confusing for drivers. For instance, there are still signs up on posts in the vicinity of the lights for events that happened two months ago. So, I’ve asked the engineer to see if he can reduce the amount of clutter beside the lights, so that drivers are not distracted.
“I’ve also asked the engineer to put down lining on the road in advance of the lights, to warn those drivers who are approaching.”
“I’m also writing to the local Gardai and the Road Safety Authority to alert them to this problem, as I am concerned that unless something is done we might see a tragic accident here.”
“Ultimately, the problem could be much reduced by the introduction of a traffic warden in school time, or the construction of a bypass to take traffic away from Julianstown. But in the short terms the steps outlined above could help to make the crossing safer” concluded Hannigan.

Interesting site from Clonroche, a village similar in size to Julianstown in Co. Wexford. Interestingly thet don’t want a bypass.
They have tidy towns information and also have some of the same issues we have, e.g. lack of broadband.
It’s a nice site overall.

Ambulances and Gardai had to attend another in a never ending series of car crashes in Julianstown village last week. Yet again a car speeding down the hill failed to see another car turing into the Duleek road and ended up embedded on the bridge. Luckily the bridge is tougher than cars and is hardly showing any sign of damage.
How long do we have to wait before one of our neighbours or children is killed or badly injured in an accident.
Julianstown residents are sick in the face pointing out the traffic volumes in the village and are being stonewalled by the council when it comes to progressing a solution. With the area population set to double in the next 10 years the only thing that is going to happen is that the traffic will get worse and the accidents will continue.
