Julianstown Noise: Off the Scale
Meath County Council released their noise map last week. The results are as expected, the noise levels in Julianstown are off the scale and equivalent to levels on the M1 motorway. The council was legally obliged to carry out this study under 2002 EU legislation adopted in 2006. The legislation is designed to prevent or reduce noise caused by large agglomerations, major roads, railways and airports. In Ireland Dublin has been the main focus of this regulation. Isn’t it ironic that the small village of Julianstown, population 600 should feature in this noise survey?
The fact is that more than 7 million vehicles per day use the village. The noise map is calculated from the traffic volumes and the topography, i.e. taking into account buildings and other physical features.
The map itself can be found here.
Meath County Council is legally responsible for preparing the noise map and is now legally obliged to engage in public consultation and prepare an action plan.
Given the seriousness of this finding in terms of the health and safety of people in Julianstown it is now imperative that the village be bypassed once and for all.

Needless to say the UK is far more advanced in this area than Ireland.
Needless to say in Ireland Dublin is way ahead of Meath.

The experience of the small village of Puckane very closely resembels Julianstown.

Julianstown is under severe pressure from the past and potential rezoning decisions of our councillors. Right now negotiations are in progress to zone enough land on the south of Drogheda for at least 5000 houses as part of the Drogheda Environs plan. At the same time negotiations are stepping up behind closed doors to rezone more land in Julianstown to double the size of the village

€63M bypass for 7000 vehicles in Mayo
Yet another town bypassed for a fraction of the traffic in Julianstown. This time is is Charlestown in Mayo. The report says that the bypass will remove 7000 vehicles per day from the town. Good luck to them, but what about the 22,000 vehicles in Julianstown.

Traffic data for M1 Drogheda bypass published
The NRA has now got data for traffic volumes on the new M1 at the toll plaza on its website.
The data show that there are between 27,000-30,000 vehicles per day using the toll. This shows more evidence that the 22,000 vehicles in Julianstown are probably not toll avoiding but are in fact travelling the shortest route to South Drogheda, East Meath.
The relative scale of the figures is also interesting. Only a small difference between the new €200M motorway and the level of traffic in Julianstown.
